Power technologies
ABB is using its presence at RenewableUK 2010 to showcase its portfolio of electrical products designed to maximise the performance and availability of onshore and offshore wind power projects.
Visitors to stand 45 will be able to find out more about ABB's experience as a key supplier to the renewable energy industry, and can see examples of some major projects delivered or talk to senior representatives from ABB.
The stand will also feature ABB technologies such as: HVDC (high-voltage direct current) transmission, the PASS M0 plug and switch system; the Safeplus vacuum circuit breaker; and the Relion range of IEC 61850 protection and control devices.
ABB's HVDC Light transmission technology has been developed for the integration of renewable power into electrical grids, even in the harshest conditions and over long distances.
The multi-terminal capability of HVDC Light offers the possibility to create offshore DC grids.
This will be one of the themes of the paper to be presented by Peter Jones, engineering manager, grid systems for ABB, in the Offshore Seminar.
The paper, entitled 'Connecting Offshore Projects', will be presented in Session B2 on Tuesday 2 November, from 11.30am to 12.45pm in the Boisdale Room.
The PASS M0 plug and switch system for distribution substations can be installed in less than a day and is virtually maintenance free.
A hybrid of ABB's traditional air insulated (AIS) and gas insulated (GIS) switchgear units, it integrates all the necessary substation switchgear bay functions, including a circuit breaker, one or more combined disconnector/earthing switches, bushings for connection to single or double busbar systems and a current transformer in one compact module, eliminating the need for separate pieces of equipment for each function.
The PASS M0 module is completely pre-fabricated, pre-wired and pre-tested at the factory and fits into a standard truck container for delivery without any packaging.
No special arrangements are needed for shipping and transportation.
Once on site just a 30deg rotation of the outer poles is needed for the final layout.
The slim-line 36KV Safeplus vacuum circuit breaker panel has a footprint of less than 500mm.
It is suitable for applications where space is restricted, such as in wind turbines.
ABB's Relion products are designed for the protection, control, measurement and supervision of power systems.
To ensure interoperable and future-proof solutions, Relion products implement the core values of the IEC 61850 standard and support Goose messaging.
