Congatec offers embedded computer modules suitable for non-graphical computing tasks

Congatec

Computer-on-modules (COMs)

Congatec’s range of computer-on-modules (COMs) with ’AMD Fusion’ technology supports Open Computer Language (OpenCL), which is suitable for applications such as non-graphical computing tasks or parallel tasks such as filtering the algorithms of photo-editing programs, programs for encoding and converting video data, and Adobe Flash Player.

OpenCL — an application programming interface — enables designers to use the high-performance graphics cores of AMD’s Accelerated Processing Unit for non-graphical applications.

OpenCL also enables the high performance of integrated Radeon graphics to be used for non-graphics applications.

Additionally, for parallel operations, the processor cores offload jobs to the graphics unit in order to increase system performance.

Furthermore, if the basic requirements for a X86 architecture have met — designers may find it more sensible to use a General Purpose Computation on Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU) instead of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP). OpenCL can be used to programme the individual GPGPU graphics engines and enables different tasks to be allocated to each engine.
