Smooth-running ballscrews help welding gun manufacturer to reduce costs

Silent-running ballscrews

Silent-running ballscrews from NSK have helped a producer of automated welding guns to reduce the costs of manufacturing a new product by 40 per cent.

This has been achieved by replacing the manufacturer’s existing actuation mechanism, which used planetary roller screws, with silent-running NSK ballscrews that are claimed to offer maximised efficiency and load carrying thanks to the integration of a greater number of load-carrying balls.

NSK was called in as part of a cost-reduction strategy introduced by the welding gun manufacturer and was tasked with providing a lower-cost alternative to the planetary roller screws that were being used. The solution had to meet stringent operating demands: it must not reduce performance nor increase energy consumption or levels of maintenance.

NSK had to consider the fact that, in welding guns, an extremely high load is applied in a very short time and always in the same point of the stroke. The company proposed an SFD3605-12 nut to ensure reliable operation.

Key benefits of product application

  • The SFD3605-12 conforms to the same dimensions as the existing design.
  • It is also said to reduce operating friction and temperature.
  • A ball recirculation technique employs a deflector at each end of the ballnut to ensure that the load-carrying balls are picked up tangentially, thus eliminating the direct ball-to-ball contact that causes noise and vibration.
  • The improved design also provides smoother and more stable running at low speeds.
