Smithers Rapra invests in ICP-OES instrument

Smithers Rapra

Varian 710 ICP OES

Smithers Rapra has expanded its chemical analytical capabilities with an inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) device, enabling the elemental analyses of various materials.

The recently purchased Varian 710 ICP OES is intended to complement the company's existing analytical methods on site at its headquarters in Shawbury, Shropshire.

Recent legislation concerning environmental, occupational and consumer protection has increased the number of analytical techniques required to assess products, such as the measurement of metallic elements, from a disused circuit board to the biocompatibility of a medical device.

Tom Forsyth, chemical analysis business manager, said: 'ICP provides a highly sensitive means of detecting a wide range of elements not only used on plastics and rubbers but also drugs, foodstuffs, ceramics and any other material that you can think of.

'Certain compounds that are useful in the formulation/stabilisation of materials and products may contain elements that are not compatible with other products or materials.

'ICP provides a method of measuring the levels of such ingredients,' he added.

This latest investment follows the purchase of the Video Extensometer, which is used to measure the physical properties of materials.
