Miyano BNJ-51SY3

Citizen Machinery supplied DKW Engineering — a subcontract machining business — with a Miyano BNJ-51SY3 two-spindle, dual-turret, turn-mill centre that reduced its lead times and helped it to win and maintain orders.

DKW selected the machine after attending several open-house events, and talking to other subcontractors. When a shortlist had been drawn up three parts were put forward for time studies then, once an order had been placed, the DKW staff who would be responsible for the machine went to Citizen Machinery’s showroom to look at the machine and feed back their comments.

The Miyano features a tool monitoring system that enables operators to see how many parts can be made ’on limit’ during roughing cycles, and effectively preset change points. Additionally, the machine stops if there are any problems.

It has an 11kW, 6,000revs/min main spindle and a 5.5kW, 5,000revs/min secondary spindle. The Miyano’s heavy-duty main turret features a 40mm Y-axis cross travel, 12 positions, and 20 Nm of torque and 6,000 revs/min available to power its driven tools. The back working turret has six tool positions.

A regulator valve — manufactured from a 30mm diameter 316 stainless steel bar — which originally had to be turned, milled and drilled in three separate operations, can now be machined in one three minute cycle. This uses overlapping sequences and simultaneous cutting.

Key benefits of product application

  • DKW said that the Miyano can produce six months of normal scheduled work within seven weeks.
  • This cut lead time and reduced the demands on setters.
  • The Miyano improved tool life.
