Kitagawa MR160 rotary tables

1st MTA supplied DMM Engineering — which manufactures outdoor and mountaineering products — with Kitagawa MR160 rotary tables to replace its old units, resulting in productivity increases on its vertical machining centres (VMCs).

The first unit purchased by DMM was installed on its Cincinnati Arrow three-axis VMC, in order to provide a fourth CNC axis for positioning complex components. The company estimates that on one job alone the purchase saved it £21,000 within the first year.

Two more were then installed on a Mazak VTC-200C VMC, which DMM uses for the pendulum machining of belay/rappel devices — a system of rope management that is used to control descent during an emergency or when abseiling. This application is unusual in that it requires 52 table indexes per cycle, rather than four.

The MR160 rotary table features a positioning speed of 41.6rpm and triple-desk break that provides a clamping force of 310Nm.

It also has the ability to store up to 100 programs of 50 block each — or equivalent — removing the need to enter command lines on a daily basis in order to synchronise with the CNC programs. Additionally, Kitagawa’s software enables fully interpolative four-axis machining.

Key benefits of product application

  • Faster communication with CNC system
  • Reductions in cycle time
  • Increased accuracy
  • Enables DMM to keep costs down
  • The client receives support from 1st MTA
