Future Technology Devices offers USB 2.0 cables designed for rapid implementation

C232HM-DDHSL-0 and C232HM-EDHSL-0 USB 2.0 cables

Future Technology Devices International (FTDI) has introduced two new USB 2.0 Hi-Speed to Digital Level Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) cables, which are designed to simply connect devices with 3.3V logic level interfaces to USB.

Both the C232HM-DDHSL-0, with 3.3V output power, and the C232HM-EDHSL-0, with 5V output power, utilise the company’s FT232H USB interface chip on a compact circuit board encapsulated into the USB connector end of the cable — this manages all USB signalling and protocols.

The cables can be used to communicate with devices using a variety of different synchronous serial interfaces, such as JTAG, SPI or I2C, while the MPSSE enables design engineers to implement their own proprietary synchronous serial bus protocols.

Possible applications include interfacing with microcontroller or programmable logic devices; USB-based medical equipment/industrial instrumentation; USB transfer of audio data; carrying out rapid USB integration in existing electronic systems; JTAG systems; and FPGA interfacing.

Key specifications

  • Length: 0.5m
  • Support data transfer rates up to 30Mb/sec
  • Both have a maximum output of 200mA at their respective output powers
  • Terminated by 10 individual single-pole connector wires, which can be interfaced to a 0.1in pitch male header
  • Powered from a USB host port — required drivers are free to download
  • Operating temperature range: -40 to +84°C
  • FCC/CE compliant
  • Both priced at $26 for quantities of one to nine pieces
