Motion-control products for applications such as bottling

Baldor

Motion controllers, servo drives, servo motors and linear motors

ABB — which has integrated with Baldor — supplies a variety of motion controllers, servo drives, servo motors and linear motors that are suitable for a wide range of applications including labelling, packaging, bottling, pick-and-place, cutting/trimming, stacking, web feeders and high-speed rotary wrappers.

ABB’s multi-axis control products include the Nextmove Mint-programmable motion controller, which incorporates a real-time Ethernet Powerlink that enables dozens of axis of control and an improved cabling infrastructure.

The range of servo drives offered consists of the analogue Microflex and Euroflex series, both of which can be used with brushless AC servo motors and rotary and linear motors. Digital motor controllers are also available in the form of the Microflex E100 and the Motiflex E100 — the former is a compact servo drive that is suitable for the advanced control of rotary and linear motors, and the latter is an advanced servo drive.

ABB’s servo motors complement the servo drives and are made up of the BSM range, the 9C (8C) series, MS series and high dynamic performance (HDP) AC induction servomotors. The HDP series features a very high torque density and, due to a lower rated current, a smaller size of device can be used for a given power.

Additionally, the company offers linear motors that the company says offer speed and positioning performance through the use of direct-coupled motion, as well as eliminating mechanical transmission devices. They also feature a rugged, mechanical design and are suitable for applications that use ball screws and timing belts.

Key features

Nextmove motion controller

  • Four variations are offered: panel-mount motion controller, Ethernet machine controller, PC-based motion controller and rack-based motion controller
  • The Nextmove ES rack-mount controller achieves a high axis density within a small space

Microflex E100 digital motor controller

  • Features an integrated, real-time Ethernet interface
  • CANopen
  • Encoder input
  • Versatile input/output

Motiflex E100 digital motor controller

  • Includes integrated, real-time Ethernet
  • CANopen
  • A universal encoder input
  • Standard TCP/IP operation

ACSM1 high performance machinery drive

  • Can control induction, synchronous and asynchronous servo and high torque motors with a range of feedback devices
  • Complements ABB’s range of servo drives

9C servo motors

  • Suitable for use with ABB high performance machinery drives

Software tools

  • Mint programming language (developed by Baldor) helps develop motion controls programs for custom applications quickly
  • Simplifies motion control using high-level commands
  • MintNC offers a machine control front end for profiling applications
  • Standard CAD file formats can be imported into MintNC
  • They can then be motion generated
  • MintNC is suitable for 2.5D applications such as laser cutting, water jet cutting, tangential knife and glue laying

Accessories

  • Interfaces include simple operator panels and programmable, colour, TFT, touch-screen panels
  • All interfaces are supported by Mint programming language
  • Programmable panels can include graphical displays, conversion of values to meaningful units, programmable alarms and passwords
