Image sensors target machine-vision applications

Cypress Semiconductor

VITA 2000/VITA 5000 image sensors

Cypress Semiconductor has announced two extensions to its Vita family of image sensors: the 2.3megapixel Vita 2000 and the 5.3megapixel Vita 5000.

They are suitable for machine vision, high-end security, 2D barcode and intelligent traffic applications.

Sensor features include pipelined and triggered global shutter modes and a conventional rolling shutter mode; speeds of up to 92 frames per second (FPS) for Vita 2000 and 75FPS for Vita 5000; and 10-bit analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs), with either parallel or serialised outputs up to 620Mbps.

Programmable registers control different operating modes and are configurable over a standard SPI interface.

The Vita 2000 can provide output in both HD (1920 x 1080), which is typically used in the security market and 4:3 (1600 x 1200), which is more common in the machine-vision market.

It offers four parallel LVDS channels and a sensor array with a standard 2/3" optical format lens.

The Vita 5000 offers eight parallel LVDS channels and has a standard 1" optical format with monochrome or colour digital output.

The pipelined global shutter capability enables exposure during read-out to reduce motion blur.

Additionally there is also a rolling shutter mode with correlated double sampling (CDS) to reduce noise and increase dynamic range.

These new sensors expand on the capabilities of the 1.3megapixel Vita 1300 family and the 25megapixel Vita 25K.
