Penny and Giles supplies tilt sensors and rotary sensors to steel manufacturer

STT280 tilt sensors and SRH280DP rotary sensors
Penny Giles supplied Sarclad with its STT280 tilt sensors and SRH280DP rotary sensors for providing critical measurements for an in-chain strand condition monitor — an online measurement system used for the monitoring of continuous casting machine rolls used in the manufacturing of steel.
Penny Giles’ STT280 tilt sensors use spring-loaded blades to tangent pairs of rolls and measure the angles between them in order to calculate the fixed-roll alignment. This enables Sarclad to identify rolls and segments that are out of position relative to other rolls within each segment.
The units feature solid state ’3D-Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems’ — used to measure the sensor’s inclination relative to the Earth’s gravity — which enables a naturally-damped response that is not affected by knocking or vibration.
SRH280DP rotary Hall effect sensors — used to measure gap displacement — were originally supplied as single channel versions, but Sarclad now uses two channel models. These can be configured either with both channel outputs increasing with clockwise or anti-clockwise shaft rotation, or one clockwise with one anti-clockwise. As they are non-contact sensors, their outputs are not affected by pressure applied to the shaft in an axial direction.
Sarclad says that the In-chain strand condition monitor enables it to avoid downtime and maintain product quality. The company also states that it has installed STT280 tilt sensors on its traditional strand condition monitor — the offline equivalent of the in-chain system.
