TPS280DP throttle position sensors

Penny and Giles supplied UH Racing — the University of Hertfordshire’s Formula Student racing team — with its TPS280DP throttle position sensors in order to help its car achieve a more definitive gear position.

Formula Student challenges university students from all over the world to design and build single-seat racing cars. As the track for 2011’s endurance event was tight and twisting the UH Racing team decided to replace its gear lever with a paddle shift system to allow drivers to change gears faster and more safely.

As the system’s ECU calculated the gear position based on wheel speed, the dashboard display telling drivers which gear was selected was inaccurate and it was decided to monitor the barrel of the engine with a sensor installed on the barrel position of the gearbox. The sensor needed to be able to withstand the high levels of shock and vibration that the engine block and gearbox barrel are subjected to.

The TPS280DP throttle position sensor was tailored to UH Racing’s specifications and factory-programmed with a 360° rotation in order to enable it to read the full range of gears.

The set-up provides the team with the exact position of the gear, which helps the driver to prepare the car for the course ahead when navigating tight corners. UH Racing also said that the sensor was very reliable and lasted for the lifetime of the engine.

Key features

  • Uses a Hall effect sensor with two outputs that can be individually programmed for angular range, output range and direction
  • No contact sensor parts
  • Shock and vibration resistant
  • Drive and body are IP69K-rated to protect against the ingress of dust and fluids
