RDP Electronics supplies linear variable differential transformers for railways

RDP Electronics

Linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs)

Linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) from RDP Electronics are suitable for sensor applications that may be exposed to shock and vibration, such as on continuous welded railway tracks.

The sensors comprise of a primary coil and two secondary coils, the latter of which are connected in opposition.

Current between the primary and secondaries is controlled by the position of a magnetic core — an armature. When this is located in the centre the output of the LVDT is zero, but as the armature moves away from this position it results in an increase in output from one of the secondaries and a decrease in another. This creates an output from the measurement sensor.

The phase of the output (compared to the excitation phase) indicates which half of the coil the armature is in.

RDP supplies special versions of the LVDTs that are designed to be installed in carries that increase their resistance to damage when attached directly to the side of a rail.

Key features

  • No electrical contact across the transducer position results in clean data and long life
  • Resistant climatic conditions such as water
  • Resistant to corrosive fluids
