Engineering plastics-plating method can be used on Nylon, Ultem and PEEK
MacDermid
MacDermid and Surface Activation Technology have co-developed a method of plating on engineering plastics such as Nylon, Ultem and PEEK involving reactive gas and specialised activation chemistry.
First, the plastic component is placed in the activation chamber, where it is subjected to a specific blend of activation gas.
The gases cause the atomic structure of the polymer to change to a depth of 25µm, creating a polar and hydrophilic surface.
The component is then racked, activated and metallised using the Macuplex SA process.
For engineering plastics, Niklad ELV electroless is often used to give wear resistance and conductivity.
