I am more than a little surprised at the attitude taken by so many of your contributors and correspondents on the subject of renewable energy, an attitude verging on the quasi religious, which has been adopted by the popular media, but one which I would not have thought would have found favour with your readership.

I am currently studying engineering at Aberdeen university. It has taken me two years to be able to say I understand what an engineer does, and believe me i have been trying to find out. I was beginning to think there was some magic circle esque secret society keeping this massive secret.

Probably too late for you, but could it be made using a rapid prototype sintering operation?

It does demonstrate that it takes far too long for the UK to build/undetake anything these days. As stated 2026 for Birmingham and another generation to Scotland! Undoubtably further delays will occur due to contract issues, funding cuts half way through shifting timescales to the right (just look at the MOD) etc.

  • From Neil Lewin, Tue, 17 Apr 2012 11:28 am in Is the engineering skills shortage a myth?

I dont believe that the skills shortage is a myth. In my experience there are lots of engineering firms looking for new recruits but the main issue appears to be matching skills to the employees available.

Its a nice decision for a student to choose engineering as carrier goal for him. After completion, they can make any field as their way of income. But the mai part is choosing branch or stream.

  • From TFala, Tue, 3 Jan 2012 3:01 pm in Do Engineering Graduates Require Better Career Advice in the UK?

I graduated from Durham university last year and received all of the advice I could of needed. Although I'm not currently working in an engineering role this is by no means due to the advice I received.
