Sources and amplifiers put photonics to the test

FPA-410, FPA-415, BBS-410 and BBS-430
A new family of broadband amplified spontaneous emission sources and erbium-doped fibre amplifiers is packaged for test and measurement of photonics components.
Newport has developed a new family of broadband ASE (amplifiedspontaneous emission) sources and EDFAs (erbium doped fibreamplifiers) packaged for test and measurement of photonicscomponents in the 1550nm spectral region.
These products leverageadvances in diode-pumped erbium-doped fibre technology to offer aquantum increase in price/performance metric compared withconventional product designs.
The product line includes theFPA-410 and FPA-415 EDFA amplifiers as well as the BBS-410 andBBS-430 broadband sources.
These new products are targeted atlaboratory applications in fibre sensing, biomedicine, telecommunications and spectroscopy.
For example, the sources andamplifiers are useful for metrology tasks such as testingfibre-optic components and subassemblies, characterisingdetectors and passive components, such as FBGs, as well as forsimulating WDM traffic.
These sources and amplifiers are alsoideal for emerging applications in fibre-optic sensing, biomedicine and fibre-based spectroscopy.
This includes use inoptical coherence tomography for noninvasive high-resolutionimaging.
The BBS-410 and BBS-430 are self-contained sourcescharacterised by high output levels.
They generate broadbandoutput though amplification of spontaneous noise in a high gainerbium-doped fibre, resulting in output as high as 14dBm (25mW).The BBS-410 output spans the telecommunications C-band(1520-1560nm) and the BBS-430 source emits over the entire C andL-bands (1520-1620nm).
The FPA-410 and FPA-415 are fullyintegrated, erbium-doped fibre amplifiers which feature high gainacross the C-band (1520-1560nm).
The low cost FPA-410 has asingle pump diode and delivers small signal gain of more than30dB.
The FPA-415 uses two pump diodes to provide more than 33dBof small signal gain with a saturated output level up to 18dBm(63mW).
In addition to their use in conventional broadbandapplications, these sources and amplifiers can be used inconjunction with the Newport LambdaCommander spectral shaper toproduce virtually any spectral profile on demand.
This includestunable narrowband output as well as complex spectral profiles.
