Power converter for subsea mineral exploration

Schaefer

Power converter

Schaefer has introduced a power converter that is suitable for subsea mineral exploration or other deep-sea applications.

According to the company, the use of industrial-grade components yields an efficient, space-saving solution, while increased mechanical strength and tropical protection facilitates reliable operation in extreme environments.

Based on Schaefer's C3700 power converter, the robust design is said to provide up to 1,100W of power with an adjustable, tightly regulated, 24VDC output.

The company can also engineer units to accept a high-voltage input (up to 5,000VDC) or to supply higher output voltages and/or output power.

No minimum load is required for stable operation.

The converter is optimised so that seawater can be used as the input return path.

The power converter operates with convection cooling over a temperature range of -20C to +75C.

All dissipated heat is efficiently conducted through a single flat aluminium surface that can be mounted to the subsea structure.

Over-temperature shutdown with alarms, featuring automatic recovery, is inherent in the design.

Various additional features and protection circuitry include remote sensing, Power-OK, DC-OK, current limiting, short-circuit protection, overvoltage protection and overload protection.
