Saft, a supplier of advanced battery systems for demanding defence applications, is unveiling its latest developments in Li-ion (lithium-ion) batteries for military vehicles at Eurosatory 2010.
Visitors to Saft's stand (K 421, hall 6) will be able to see a battery system concept designed specifically for starting and silent watch applications in armoured vehicles.
Saft is also showing its range of energy storage solutions for conventional and hybrid military vehicles, as well as weapons systems and field power delivery applications, based on Li-ion, Super-phosphate and asymmetrical nickel capacitor technology.
Saft said it has developed an Li-ion battery concept that offers a high-performance alternative to conventional lead-acid batteries for armoured military vehicles.
The 28V battery is designed to deliver large reserves of power for reliable engine starting, as well as supporting onboard electrical systems throughout the long periods of autonomous operation demanded by extended silent watch missions.
The use of Saft's Li-ion technology offers a reduction in both the battery weight and onboard footprint, while also ensuring a long service life, according to the company.
The Remus (Renewable Energy Mobile Utility Systems) incorporated renewable wind and solar energy with a Saft HEMV Li-ion battery, composed of VL34P high-power cells.
The Saft Li-ion battery system stores energy for the Remus system, supplementing the diesel generator particularly to provide utility-scale electrical services in situations where continued fuel sources are not available or too costly.
The HEMV battery has also powered several US military hybrid electric demonstrators, including General Dynamics Land System's Advanced Ground Mobility demonstrator.
In addition to batteries for military vehicles, Saft is also showing its complete range of primary and rechargeable lithium batteries for a wide range of military applications - from powering infantry communications and weapons systems to UGVs.
As part of its strategy to deliver complete power systems to defence customers, Saft has developed specialised military chargers that ensure fast and efficient charging and a long service life.
These include the ECMC2 (Extended Capability Multi Chemistry Charger) range of smart, multi-capability military battery chargers designed to charge virtually any type of infantry battery both in the field and at the base camp.
