Nickel-based batteries from Alcad provide back-up power for AC/DC converter stations

Alcad

Vantex battery systems

Ten Alcad Vantex nickel-based rechargeable battery systems have been supplied to Nampower — Nambia’s transmission system operator — to provide back-up power for two AC/DC converter stations used at each end of the country’s high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) Caprivi Link Interconnector.

The HVDC transmission link covers a distance of 950km — from Zambezi, close to the Zambian border, to Gerus, which is in the centre of the country — and helps to stabilise two weak networks.

Nampower selected the Alcad units as they met its specifications for high capacity, compact footprint, long life and low maintenance.

The Vantex batteries can provide up to 16 hours of autonomous power for the protection relays, critical control systems and other DC-supplied equipment at the converter stations within the 300MW HVDC.

The 10 battery systems installed comprise more than 1,000 Vantex cells. They are compact, they do not need to be connected in parallel and they can be stored for up to two years in normal conditions.
