Thurlby Thandar offers SSR's low-cost signal generator with many modulation capabilities

Thurlby Thandar Instruments

SG384 signal generator

The SG384 from Stanford Research Systems (SSR), available in the UK from Thurlby Thandar Instruments, is a DC to 4GHz signal generator that delivers frequency resolution down to 1µHz.

According to the company, the instrument uses rational approximation frequency synthesis to deliver ultra-high frequency resolution, excellent phase noise and versatile modulation capabilities at a fraction of the cost of competing designs.

It offers a wide variety of modulation capabilities, including amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), phase modulation (ØM) and pulse modulation.

There is an internal modulation source that produces sine, ramp, saw, square and noise waveforms, while an external modulation signal may be applied to the rear-panel modulation input.

Key features

  • Frequency resolution down to 1µHz
  • Remote operation supported by GPIB, RS-232 and Ethernet
  • Saves up to nine complete instrument configurations in non-volatile memory
  • Rear-panel outputs allow noise source to be viewed
  • Optional I/Q inputs allow I and Q baseband signals to modulate carriers from 400MHz to 4.05GHz
  • Comes with oven-controlled crystal oscillator (OCXO) timebase
  • Timebase provides 0.002ppm low-phase noise and low ageing
  • Optional rubidium oscillator further reduces frequency ageing
