Avago designs ultra-low power optocouplers

Optocouplers

Avago Technologies has developed an ultra-low power optocoupler technology for the next generation of optical isolators operating at up to 90 per cent less power than standard optocouplers.

The total power consumption of this optocoupler design is below 2mA compared to 15mA for a standard optocoupler and 4mA to 5mA for magnetic isolators.

These ultra-low power optocouplers target designers of communication interfaces (RS485, CANBus and I2C), microprocessor system interfaces, and digital isolation for A/D, D/A conversion applications.

Avago's ultra-low power optocoupler design features an optically coupled gate that combines a high-efficiency LED and an integrated high-gain photo detector, enabling designers to interface the optocoupler input directly from a microcontroller output - avoiding the use of buffers to drive the LED.

These next-generation optocouplers support 3.3V and 5V supply voltages and provide reliable system performance in industrial temperatures ranging from -40 to +105C.

The design offers a reduction in power requirements without compromising on isolation and insulation performance.

In particular, the use of thick insulation materials facilitates good high-voltage lifetime and meets the requirements of safe insulation for reinforced applications.

The use of an LED input together with a Faraday shielded photodetector circuit enables best-in-class application-level common-mode noise immunity.

The devices are available in a variety of packages including multi-channel small outline.

Safety approvals for reinforced insulation are pending.
