GCE series of monolithic ceramic capacitors
Murata has developed the GCE series of monolithic capacitors, which are designed to be less prone to failure due to mechanical stress.
Because the capacitive element of GCE devices has a soft termination, mechanical stress caused by board flexing or large temperature variations is less likely to cause the capacitor body to crack.
Murata achieved this by using a conductive resin for the terminations, which increases the body’s ability to absorb stresses such as these.
To help prevent short circuiting, the GCE capacitors have a multi-layer serial capacitor (MLSC) construction, in which an internal ‘floating’ plate creates an equivalent circuit of two capacitors in series.
