Rofin offers range of lasers designed for manufacturing MWT and EWT solar cells

Rofin-Baasel

Lasers for solar cell production

Rofin is offering a wide range of laser sources for solar thin-film edge deletion applications, including the manufacture of advanced solar cell concepts such as MWT or EWT cells.

According to Rofin, lasers are widely used within the solar cell industry because the automation of laser processing is straightforward and the manufacturing costs associated with laser tools are low.

Contact-free infrared, hot air or laser soldering processes are used to connect tin-plated copper ribbons in solar module assembly and the bi-wavelength copper welding process is claimed to open up possibilities for flexible assembly of standard and back contact cells.

Rofin claims the laser-welding process, in combination with a pre-patterned copper foil, is a good joining process for MWT and EWT cells as it avoids the use of lead and complies with RoHS directives.
