Gaussian mirrors

Laser Components is offering Gaussian mirrors — otherwise known as graded reflectivity mirrors — which can be used as output couplers in unstable resonators, as well as to generate laser beams with a homogeneous power distribution for illumination applications within the material processing and medical sectors.

The mirrors are also designed to ensure high pump efficiency within frequency-doubled systems.

They have a special coating that features a degree of reflection that falls off in a Gaussian-shaped curve, starting at the optic’s centre.

Users can select nearly any shape they want the Gaussian curve to take.

According to the company, the reflection values in the centre can range from a few per cent to up to 85 per cent.

Key benefits

  • The cost of manufacturing the devices is said to be low
  • The mirrors remain stable in the laser
  • They are suitable for high power levels
