Tyco Electronics has expanded the Elcon Mini Crown Edge line of low profile, high-current power connectors.
Tyco Electronics has expanded the Elcon Mini Crown Edge line of low profile, high-current power connectors for pluggable voltage regulator modules (VRM) used in 1U and 2U server applications.
This product is now available in several form factors designed to meet different application specifications.
The VRM 10.2 configuration features 12 individual power contacts, plus 18 signal contacts, all in a form factor that is less than 4in in length.
Another available configuration has 18 power contacts plus 20 signal contacts, which can deliver up to 225A input and return.
In contrast with VRM connectors currently available in the market that use low current signal contact, Mini Crown Edge connectors use Elcon high-performance Crown Band power contacts to deliver high power density making them ideal for VRM 10.2 applications and beyond with requirements of up to 150A input and return.
Individual power contacts are rated at 25A each (30C temperature rise in still air).
These low profile power contacts have a short path length giving lower loop inductance levels, thus meeting the high slew rate requirements of recent VRM-to-MPU power delivery architectures.
Mini crown edge connectors are also available in a configuration that has 18 power contacts plus 20 signal contacts, which can deliver up to 225A input and return.
Termination-to-the-board options include surface mount (SMT), two lengths of through-hole PC tails, and compliant press-fit pins.
The SMT version of the connector comes with a board hold-down feature that facilitates the soldering process.
Two latches hold the voltage regulator module to the connector and are robust enough to accommodate not just 1U but also 2U VRMs, as verified by rigorous shock and vibration testing.
In addition, the connector's low profile design allows more room for placement of components on the VRM board.
Tyco Electronics plans to introduce a right angle and a straddle mount version of the VRM 10.2 layout by the 4th quarter 2004.
These new configurations allow for further improvement of airflow in the system.
The Mini crown edge line is under evaluation by Underwriters Laboratories for compliance with the UL1977 standard and the CSA standard C22.2 No 182.3-M1987.
