Ethernet switches suit use in harsh applications

Acal Technology

Spider Ethernet switches

ACAL Technology is sampling Amphenol's new series of Spider Ethernet switches, designed to deliver higher speeds and Ethernet connectivity in military and other extreme applications.

The Spider Ethernet switches are available in managed and unmanaged versions, from 10Mbit to 10Gbit, and feature a modular design that combines ports for MIL-DTL-38999 (Series III) connectors and Ethernet.

They are designed for harsh applications such as portable military equipment, rugged networks and avionic or shipboard systems.

Spider Ethernet is claimed to enhance reliability with power filtering and protection; full-duplex operation with flow control; auto-detect, auto-cross and auto-polarity functions; and protection against broadcast storms.

Designed specifically for use in extreme environments, the switches feature a waterproof metallic enclosure with IP68 sealing when mated or unmated, as well as testing to IEEE Ethernet standards and conformance to MIL-STD-461.

The conductive plating allows Spider switches to be used in applications with high EMI/RFI conditions, while the use of passive cooling eliminates all moving parts.

These features enable Spider Ethernet switches to withstand high temperatures, extreme shock, vibration and dust, or immersion in liquid.
