TPS62120 converter
Texas Instruments (TI) has introduced an ultra-low-power step-down converter for energy-harvesting and low-power applications.
The new TPS62120 achieves 96 per cent efficiency and can generate a 75mA output current from an input voltage of 2V to 15V.
The device supports energy-harvesting and battery-powered applications, as well as 9V and 12V line-powered systems.
The TPS62120 synchronous converter features a power-save mode to provide high efficiency over the entire load current range, reaching 75 per cent efficiency at loads down to 100uA.
During light-load operation, the device operates in a pulse frequency modulation (PFM) mode, consuming only 11uA of quiescent current.
The TPS62120 also maintains smooth, efficient operation at higher currents by transitioning automatically from its power-save mode to a fixed-frequency PWM mode.
The converter enables power generation for a range of microcontrollers (MCUs), such as TI's ultra-low-power MSP430 MCUs and the CC430 and TI's single-chip MSP430 and low-power radio-frequency solution.
The TPS62120 features smooth start-up from weak energy sources, a wide under-voltage lockout (UVLO) hysteresis and an operating range from 2.5V rising to 1.85V falling.
It also offers a very low power of 75mA output and a power-save mode with 11uA quiescent current.
The TPS62120 is available in volume now from TI and its authorised distributors in an eight-pin, 3 x 3mm SOT-23 package.
The device is also offered in a six-pin, 2 x 2mm QFN package.
The suggested resale price for the TPS62120 is USD0.95 (GBP0.61) in 1,000-unit quantities, while the suggested retail price for the TPS62122 is USD1.05 in 1,000-unit quantities.
