IES5528 circuit gives negative triac-gate pulses

IES5528 phase-control integrated circuit
Hendon Semiconductors has released the IES5528 phase-control integrated circuit, which is a drop-in replacement for the OM5428.
The IES5528 provides negative triac-gate pulses that avoid the insensitive triac-trigger quadrants.
By doing this it uses significantly less supply current and reduces dissipation in the supply resistor, allowing the use of low-wattage power resistors.
The external configurability of the IES5528 also makes it suitable for a variety of mains-power control applications.
For example, the IES5528 can be used as a soft-start motor controller to eliminate the effect of high starting torque, synchronous on/off switching and time-proportional temperature control.
Various application diagrams are available from the datasheet.
The IES5528 is mains powered through a mains-dropping resistor, removing the need for additional DC supply circuitry.
An external DC supply rail is also available from the IES5528 for powering sensors and/or low-power ICs.
IES5528 is designed to minimise RF interference and transients on the mains supply, with zero crossing switching of load current.
The IES5528 is available in a SO-16 RoHS-compliant package.
