The MAX1586A, MAX1586B and MAX1587A are billed as the smallest, most efficient power-management ICs optimised for devices using Intel X-Scale microprocessors.

Applications includethird-generation smart cellphones, PDAs, Internet appliances, andother portable devices requiring substantial computing andmultimedia capability at low power.

The MAX1586 and MAX1587feature ultra-high-performance step-down convertors with 1MHzsynchronous rectification that eliminates external diodes, thussaving cost and size.

These ICs integrate seven high-performance,low-operating-current power supplies along with supervisory andmanagement functions.

The DC/DC I/O supply can be preset to 3.3or 3.0V, or adjusted to other values, with currents up to 1.3A.The DRAM supply on the MAX1586A and MAX1587A is preset for 1.8 or2.5V, whereas the MAX1586B DRAM supply is preset for 3.3 or 2.5V,providing up to 900mA.

The DRAM supply on all parts can also beadjusted with external resistors.

The CPU core supply is seriallyprogrammed for dynamic voltage management and delivers 500mA.Linear-regulated outputs are provided for SRAM, PLL, and USIMsupplies.

To minimise sleep-state quiescent current, I/O and DRAMsupplies have bypass "sleep" LDOs.

These LDOs can beactivated to minimise battery drain when output current is verylow, thus achieving a quiescent current of only 60uA.

Inaddition, all DC/DC outputs operate with fixed-frequency PWMcontrol and automatically switch from PWM to skip-mode operationat light loads to extend battery life.

Other functions includeseparate on/off control for all DC/DC convertors, low-battery anddead-battery detection, reset and power-OK outputs, and a backupbattery input.

A 2.6 to 5.5V input-voltage range allows the useof a single-cell lithium-ion (Li+), three-cell NiMH or aregulated 5V input.

The MAX1586A and MAX1586B each feature anadditional linear regulator (V6) for VCC USIM and low-battery anddead-battery comparators.

The MAX1587A is available in thesmaller 6 x 6mm, 40-pin thin QFN package, and the MAX1586 isavailable in a 7 x 7mm, 48-pin thin QFN package.

The parts arescreened for the extended temperature range (-40 to +85C).
