Allegro Microsystems introduces DC motor controller IC for automotive applications

Allegro Microsystems

A4960 motor drive system

Allegro Microsystems Europe has introduced a three-phase sensorless brushless DC motor controller IC for controlling pumps, blowers and cooling fans in automotive applications.

The A4960 — which incorporates diagnostic and protection features — is designed for use with external N-channel power MOSFETs.

The motor drive system uses a block commutation (trapezoidal drive) approach, where phase commutation is determined, without the need for independent position sensors, by monitoring the motor back EMF.

According to the company, a programmable motor start-up scheme allows the A4960 to be adjusted for a range of motor and load combinations.
