Fujitsu partners Cisco for interoperable demo

Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) and Cisco will team up at this year's Mobile World Congress to show a multi-application interoperable demonstration.

It will include video streaming by using mobile WiMax with adaptive beamforming and multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) capabilities.

The demo will use Cisco's BWX8305 WiMax base station and Fujitsu's mobile WiMax USB terminal featuring multiple video streaming and FTP files, which will be wirelessly transferred between the Cisco base station and the Fujitsu USB dongle.

Fujitsu's mobile WiMax USB terminal is based on the Fujitsu mobile WiMax chipset.

The chipset includes the Fujitsu MB86K21, a MAC and PHY mixed signal baseband SoC, and the MB86K71 RF module, incorporating an RF-IC, antenna switches, a power amplifier, filters and an oscillator circuit.

Fujitsu's mobile WiMax reference design has been certified by the WiMax Forum.

Fujitsu and Cisco have been investigating a wide range of WiMax technologies beyond the usual specified certification during their interoperability testing.

This collaborative effort came as a result of a jointly signed IOT agreement.

The interoperability demonstration with Cisco showcases how adaptive beamforming with MIMO technology is implemented in a mobile WiMax (802.16e-2005) network.

It is estimated that smart WiMax systems will double the system capacity, while offering up to twice the coverage of simple WiMax networks in a fully mobile setting.

Fujitsu and Cisco will undertake interoperability tests on a mobile internet device (MID) based on Fujitsu's new WiMax module and Cisco's base station.

Fujitsu's second-generation mobile WiMax module consists of the MB86K22 baseband IC, power management IC and tri-band RF IC, and is optimised for embedded use.

Fujitsu said its low-power process technology coupled with its power gating scheme reduces power consumption by 70 per cent when compared to the first-generation baseband chip.
