MCS9950 controller chip
Moschip Semiconductor Technology has launched a multifunction controller chip with PCI Express (PCIe) connectivity that is ideal for docking stations in media players and point-of-sale terminals.
The MCS9950 controller chip is also suitable for serial attached devices, serial networking/monitoring equipment, embedded systems I/O expansions and industrial control, security, monitoring and PC applications.
This multifunction controller chip features built-in support to enable a variety of PCIe to multiple I/O connectivity and display options.
The MCS9950 is a multifunction PCIe controller that supports an XGA-compatible display controller (up to 1,024 x 768), up to four serial ports, a parallel port and eight GPIOs.
It provides a one-lane (x1) 2.5Gbps PCIe bus.
The display interface provides an LVDS-based flat-panel display (FPD) link that allows direct connectivity to FPDs.
The PCIe configuration registers and device options can be configured from an external EEPROM through a dedicated I2C interface.
The MCS9950 supports a 13-pin proprietary interface to connect and cascade other supported Moschip devices for I/O expansion.
In conjunction with the company's MCS8142/44, the MCS9950 - with its display interfaces - is suitable for transaction terminal applications such as ATMs and kiosks, POS applications and industrial control systems.
The core and analogue supply voltage is rated at approximately 1.2V while the I/O supply voltage is rated at 3.3V.
The operating temperature is up to 85C.
The part is fully compliant with the PCIe base specification, revision 1.1.

The parts are offered with support and reference design services.
Software support for the respective devices includes Windows 7, 32-bit and 64-bit; Windows 32 and 64/XP 2008 server; Windows 32 2000/XP/2003 server and Windows 64 XP/2003 server; Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit; WinCE 5.0 and 6.0; Linux Kernel 2.6.11 and above; Mac 10.4 and above; and Windows-XP-based EEPROM, GPIO utility and diagnostics.
The parts have WHQL certification for Windows XP, Vista and 7 device drivers.
