High-g acceleration sensors for car airbags

ST Microelectronics

acceleration sensors

STMicroelectronics's range of acceleration sensors for advanced airbag systems can detect rapid deceleration of the vehicle during a crash and send instant information to the airbag control unit.

The AIS1xxxDS peripheral-sensor accelerometers provide single-axis in-plane motion sensing across five full-scale ranges, from +/-20 up to +/-400g.

In practice, an on-chip IC interface converts the deceleration data into a high-resolution digital bit stream that is transmitted to a dedicated microcontroller chip through a standard DSI protocol, then finally algorithms evaluate the situation and decide whether or not to deploy the airbag within a few milliseconds.

The micro-machined, high-g accelerometers operate within a temperature range of -40 to 125C, are resistant to electromagnetic interference and are qualified to AEC-Q100.

The sensing part of the airbag accelerometer is fabricated on ST's 8in micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) line, which has produced more than 850m motion sensors to date.

The electrical part utilises Silicon-On-Insulator technology, produced through the ST's proprietary BCD manufacturing process.

Samples of ST's AIS1xxxDS peripheral acceleration sensors for airbags are available and volume production is scheduled for 2012.

Unit pricing is $3 (?1.86) for volumes in the range of 1000 pieces, with further pricing options available for larger quantities.
