All electrical connectors corrode — even high-quality gold-plated connecting surfaces are not immune from the laws of physics. Thin and often invisible insulating films can form on the surfaces of electrical connectors. Such corrosive films are produced by the reactions of natural environments with elements used in the manufacture of commercial and military electrical connectors.

According to this article from Envirotech Europe, before corrosion can take place, four conditions must be satisfied: the presence of a corrodible metal or alloy (anode); the presence of a dissimilar conductive material that has a lesser tendency to corrode (cathode); the presence of an electrolyte, fresh or salt water; and electrical contact between the anode and the cathode. The elimination of any of the above conditions will halt the corrosion process.
